The Three Levels Of Kata

Tanigawa Sensei 谷川先生 often spoke of the similarities of Budo 武道 Martial Arts to Shodo
書道 calligraphy, and how the three levels of kata are easily explained through the ways of Shodo 書道. The three styles in Shodo are Kaisho 楷書 (block or basic script), Gyosho 行書 (semi-cursive or flowing script) and Sosho 草書 (cursive or artist interpretation script). These styles perfectly illustrate the study and development of kata within the Bubishi no Ken lineage 武備誌の拳系図. The three images below show the kanji for Kibukan 鬼武館 one of the Bubishi no Ken dojo, in each of the three styles. This post is not Tanigawa Sensei's full understanding, but an Anji 暗示 hint for you to think on then explore and discover!

Tanken to Hakken

After studying from all three rivers, Inyo Kushu Do, Bubishi Kenkyukai and Mugen Ryu Hei Jutsu, Sugasawa Sensei presented Tennent Sensei with some shodo written by Tanigawa Sensei. The calligraphy means Tanken to Hakken Explore and Discover. Tanigawa Sensei said "I am teaching what cannot be taught" and that through the good hint we must explore and discover to develop our own understanding. This way we can become a martial artist and not a martial imitation.
